HP LaserJet Pro M426fdn settings and factory reset

When running my HP LaserJet Pro M426fdn for the first time I didn’t removed touchscreen foil and my finger slipped over when selecting location of my printer. I ended up with having proper language but location set to Estonia and some reports (like Google Cloud Print configuration leaflet) printed in cyrylic.

Unfortunately, due to extreme stupidity of HP engineers you can only change language of your printer using standard configuration menu. But, in order to change location of the printer you have to perform a full factory reset of your hardware.

And here my problems started, because none of the solution I found seemed working on my printer.

There are various descriptions of solutions and way how you can reset settings of HP LaserJet Pro M426fdn printer or how to bring it back to factory defaults. Often denying each other. Finally, after calling HP support twice and digging up through Internet I managed to discover the proper solution.

Settings reset

  1. Turn the product off.
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. When HP logo appears, press and hold the lower right corner of the touchscreen. Keep it pressed for approx. 45-60 s.
  4. When the Permanent Storage Init. message appears on the display, release the press.
  5. When the product has finished initialization, it returns to the ready state.

Works as written in last point. Resets all settings, but ends up in ready state, not in language and location selection welcome screen. Thus, does not reset the printer to factory defaults state.

Full factory reset

Repeat above steps, holding LEFT corner of the touchscreen instead:

  1. Turn the product off.
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. When HP logo appears, press and hold the lower left corner of the touchscreen. Keep it pressed for approx. 45-60 s.
  4. When the Permanent Storage Init. message appears on the display, release the press.
  5. When the product has finished initialization, it displays language and location selection screen.

Not working solutions

Press buttons on the left side of touch screen: up (back), down (help), up (back), up (back). This supposed to display factory menu from which I was supposed to be able to select full factory reset.

Does not work at all on HP LaserJet Pro M426fdn.

I think that the best way would be to contact HP support. This is, as you may probably seen, by no way HP- or any other vendor-support site, so I can’t help you, sorry!

Sorry, I can’t help you. This is not a HP support site (or any other vendor support site). This is a private blog. You most Google-out (or discover by any other way) local HP support phone number in your country and call them for a help.

The “up (back), down (help), up (back), up (back)” trick is what worked for me for my HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dw

I wanted to mention it because your entry here is the only place I’ve found that gave out this information which worked for my model.

    Thanks!

My touch screen has nothing on it. Completely blank, white screen. I do not know how I did that or how to fix it. Can someone help me. What is a URL…

This is a private, fun blog, not a HP support site, sorry. All I can suggest — if restarting or factory resetting your printer brings no resolution — is to check your printer MAC address (should be printed on the back, i.e. service tag). If you have access to your router then check its clients list which IP address it is using (using printer’s MAC address).

      If:

      a) your MAC address is not known to you
      b) you don’t have an access to your router or
      c) your printer does not registers itself with that MAC address on your router

then the only option that you’re left with is to contact your local service shop or HP support to seek some help.

Found this page when I was searching around to fix a error 49 that kept looping on the same printer (m426fdn). Following the steps and holding the bottom right of the screen cleared whatever was causing the error and I was able to get it up and running as before. Thanks for posting the fix! Saves me from buying a new one :)
