Polycom SoundPoint IP 331 passwords and resetting quick guide
I had some problems with my Polycom SoundPoint IP 331 PoE phone and I decided to write this short guide / memo to have everything in one place for future use instead of digging this information from the Internet over and over again.
Default passwords
Most changes in configuration and when resetting things requires you to provide admin password or user passowrd. When accessing web panel you must provide username as well. Here are default values:
- username:
Polycom
(case sensitive), - admin password:
456
, - user Password:
123
.
You can provide user password when asked for admin password, but you will have access to limited set of options and functionalities in this case.
If you lost your user password you can try to reset phone to default values (if you know admin password). If you lost your admin password then you must reset phone to factory defaults. Instructions for doing this are at the end of this article, however keep in mind that I failed to follow them and never actually done full factory reset of a phone.
Username is always Polycom
(case sensitive) and this cannot be changed.
Changing display name
To change display name (you must know current admin password):
- Select: Menu -> 3 (Settings) -> 2 (Advanced).
- Enter Password (456 is default). Hit OK.
- Select: 1 (Admin Settings) -> 2 (Line Configuration).
- Hit ↓. Hit ✓. Hit ✓.
- Enter display name using num pad (see below).
- Hit ← twice. Hit Yes to confirm.
Change is completed. Phone will restart.
When entering display name:
- hit # to cycle between available character sets (letters, digits etc.),
- hit * to enter special character (you cannot enter space; see below),
- hit ↑ to change next letter to uppercase,
- hit ↓ to change next letter to lowercase,
- hit ← or → to navigate between characters.
(can be done via web panel — http://PHONE-IP-ADDRESS/reg_1.htm
)
When using phone’s dial pad you cannot enter space in your display name (to separate first name from last name use period instead). When using web panel you can enter space, but this will render your phone useless (many features not working; unable to call any number) and you’ll end up with need of resetting your phone to defaults (see below).
Changing user or admin password
To change default user password (must know current admin and user password):
- Select: Menu -> 3 (Settings) -> 2 (Advanced).
- Enter Password (456 is default). Hit OK.
- Select: 2 (Change User P/W).
- Hit ✓. Enter current user password (123 is default). Hit OK.
- Hit ↓. Hit ✓. Enter new user password. Hit OK.
- Hit ↓. Hit ✓. Confirm new user password. Hit OK.
- Hit ←. Hit Yes.
Change is completed. Phone won’t restart.
(cannot be done via web panel)
To change default admin password (must know current admin password):
- Select: Menu -> 3 (Settings) -> 2 (Advanced).
- Enter Password (456 is default). Hit OK.
- Select: 1 (Admin Settings) -> 6 (Change Adm P/W).
- Hit ✓. Enter current user password (123 is default). Hit OK.
- Hit ↓. Hit ✓. Enter new user password. Hit OK.
- Hit ↓. Hit ✓. Confirm new user password. Hit OK.
- Hit ←. Hit Yes.
Change is completed. Phone won’t restart.
(cannot be done via web panel)
Reseting phone
To reset phone to default settings (must know current admin password):
- Select: Menu -> 3 (Settings) -> 2 (Advanced).
- Enter Password (456 is default). Hit OK.
- Select: 1 (Admin Settings) -> 5 (Reset to Defaults) -> 1 (Reset Local Config) -> Yes.
Phone will restart.
(cannot be done via web panel)
To reset admin password or reset phone to factory defaults you must know phone’s MAC address in numeric format. Read your MAC address from the back of your phone and then try to replicate it using letters on phone’s key pad (i.e. replace A
, B
and C
in hexadecimal MAC address with 1
and D
, E
and E
with 2
).
Then follow one of these guides:
- “What to do if the default “456” password does not work“.
- “How To Factory Reset Polycom Phone When Default Password Does Not Work“.
However, keep in mind that I have followed these guides step-by-step at least few times and always failed! I have never managed to successfully reset my Polycom SoundPoint IP 331 PoE phone to factory defaults.
